First performed in 1947, Jean Genet’s notorious study of fractured identity and impossible desire has lost none of its power to provoke and appal. Two sisters, Claire and Solange, servants in an upper middle-class home in Paris, take refuge from their shame and despair in an elaborate nightly ritual of retribution.
But the surreptitious dressing-up masks a disturbing reality as a dangerous game with death unfolds.
